Why drains block in Ashford, and what we do about it
Ashford sits on clay where five main rivers meet, including the Great Stour and the East Stour. Clay doesn't let water soak away, so rain runs off quickly into ditches, gullies and drains. Kent County Council's flood report for the borough says surface water flooding in the town mostly happens when gullies and drains are clogged with leaves or debris during heavy or prolonged rain.
The report names Beaver Road, South Stour Avenue, Hythe Road, the Sevington Bridge area and Victoria Park among the places affected, and notes South Willesborough's long history of flooding, which led to the Aylesford Stream being engineered. The Hothfield and Aldington flood storage reservoirs protect the town from the rivers; the drains and gullies at street level are down to regular maintenance.
Reservoirs for the rivers, drains for the streets
The Hothfield and Aldington flood storage reservoirs, operating since 1991 and 1989, hold back the Great Stour and East Stour. In February 2014 Aldington reached full capacity. They protect Ashford from the rivers, but the town's own gullies and drains still have to carry the rain that falls on its roads and roofs.
A fast-growing town
Ashford has grown quickly, with large estates at Kingsnorth, Finberry, Repton Park and Chilmington Green alongside older terraces near the town centre. New plastic drainage mostly blocks with wipes, fat and debris from building work; older clay pipes suffer roots and shifted joints. We'll tell you which you've got.
Is it your drain or Southern Water's?
Ashford Borough Council confirms that Southern Water is the sewerage company for the borough and maintains the public sewers. A drain serving only your property, inside your boundary, is usually yours. If we find the blockage is on the public side, we'll tell you so you can report it.

I'm on a new-build estate. Who looks after my drains?
Pipes serving only your home, inside your boundary, are usually yours. On some newer estates the shared drains haven't yet been adopted by Southern Water and are still the developer's or a management company's responsibility. We can find the blockage and tell you whose pipe it's in.
Why does my garden or drive flood on clay ground?
Ashford's clay doesn't let water soak away, so it runs off to the nearest gully or channel drain. If that's partly blocked with leaves or silt, it overflows. We clear it, check the pipe and tell you whether a soakaway is ever going to work on your ground.
Do you cover the villages around Ashford?
